Share of renewables installed in protected areas 2022, by country
Around 15 percent of the wind and solar farms across the globe overlapped with conservation areas. This intersection was particularly high in Portugal, where 29.33 percent of the installed renewable capacity was located in protected areas as of 2022. Outside Europe, the country with the largest overlap was Brazil, where 13.83 percent of the total area of solar and wind farms contained within protected areas.
