In 2021, the number of passengers transported on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) network amounted to approximately 196 million. This represents the period of COVID-19 pandemic induced economic slump which has not recovered yet. The annual ridership has dropped further by 0.7 percent in 2021 after a considerable year-over-year decrease of around 56.7 percent in 2020. The CTA is the agency responsible for public transit in Chicago, Illinois, and some of its suburbs, and it operates a rapid rail transit system (the Chicago 'L'), together with the CTA bus service.
