In a survey conducted in 2021, around one-third of Japanese consumers stated that they used cashless payments most of the time when shopping at supermarkets. While about 39.5 percent of consumers almost always used cashless payment methods in major nationwide chains, around 21.2 percent preferred cash in most situations.
