Major international companies like Ikea, LVMH, and KPMG suspended their operations in Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, thus affecting thousands of employees in Russia. For example, the furniture retailer Ikea employed nearly 15 thousand people in sales and production in the country. Furthermore, around 1.4 thousand employees worked for the advertising holding WPP. McDonald's announced plans to continue paying its 62 thousand employees during the temporary closure. Philip Morris International, which employed 4.1 thousand people in Russia, was the highest-earning foreign company in the country in 2020.
