Most popular Android app categories worldwide 2021, by downloads

In 2021, gaming apps for Android devices generated more than 46 billion downloads from users worldwide. Tool apps were the second-most popular app category for global Android users, with 9.9 billion downloads. Social media apps saw more than eight billion downloads in the examined year. Mobile app downloads onto Android devices were higher than downloads onto iOS devices, with gaming apps for iOS devices generating less than 10 billion downloads from users worldwide despite being the most popular category for iPhone and iPad users.
