Argentina: payment methods in retail 2022

Cash money was used less often for in-store payments in Argentina, although its decline did slow down between 2020 and 2022. Opposed to this is the growth of both debit cards as well as wallets: Mobile wallets, for example, saw their overall market share in POS payments increase from four percent in 2017 to 12 percent by 2021. This change is attributed to the growing popularity of Mercardo Pago during the COVID-19 pandemic in Argentina. The wallet from Latin America's biggest online marketplace Mercado Libre offers offline, contactless payment options in cooperation with MasterCard since 2019.

Supplementary notes

In 2022, the source stated it made two changes to the categories used in previous years. These include a combination of "credit cards" with "charge/deferred debit cards" and the split of BNPL from "POS financing" (which itself was added as a new category in 2020). The latter change was made to atone for the "growing importance of BNPL". This seems to have been reverted in 2023 - for the year 2022.

The figures have been taken from several publications. No figures were available for 2018 as the source did not release any reports that year.
