Leading nuclear power plants worldwide 2022, based on capacity
Japanese nuclear capacity
As of 2022, the Japanese Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station was the biggest nuclear power plant in the world, with a capacity of 7,965 megawatts. This gigantic power plant, which is stretched over an area of 4.2 square kilometers and consists of seven reactor units, plays a crucial role in the Japanese economy. Japan's nuclear energy industry has been overshadowed, however, after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. As a result of the disaster, many countries reiterated their intention to phase out nuclear power.Nuclear reactors around the world
Globally, the number of nuclear reactors are increasing in Asia while they are decreasing in Western Europe and North America. For instance, Germany has pledged to shut down all nuclear power plants by 2022. That being said, at present, Europe and the United States have 176 and 93 operating nuclear power plants, which amounts to the majority of the world's active nuclear reactors.During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, was attacked by Russian forces and caught fire. Luckily, no leakages of radiation were reported to have occurred as a result of the fire.
