
Types of fraud causing the most losses to e-merchants in the U.S. 2021
Synthetic identity fraud, which involves the creation of false identities to commit fraud, accounted for the largest share of fraud losses (30 percent) suffered by U.S. online merchants in 2021. Friendly fraud, a practice in which consumers complete a purchase and subsequently file a claim for a refund, ranked second, accounting for 29 percent of losses for e-merchants in the United States.
