In Latin America and the Caribbean, Haiti had the highest rate of pre-trial detainees in 2022. Approximately 81.9 percent of people in prison were detained by the state awaiting for trial. Paraguay followed with 71.1 percent. Further, Haiti was also the nation in the region with the highest level of occupancy in their prison system that year.
