Thermal coal imports from Russia worldwide 2020, by region
Europe was the leading region by thermal coal imports from Russia, which amounted to 57 million metric tons in 2020. China and South Korea ranked second and third, having bought 31 million metric tons and 20 million metric tons of Russian thermal coal, respectively. The European Union (EU) planned to ban coal imports from Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The ban was expected to take effect in August 2022.
