As of August 2021, according to a national survey, 494 municipalities in Japan had bicycle rentals in areas around train stations, increasing from 469 two years earlier. Private operators provided most of the rental bicycles.

*The study targets all cities in Japan as well as towns and villages in the areas around Tokyo (50km radius), Nagoya (40km radius), and Osaka (50km radius), resulting in 909 municipalities for 2021.
Bicycles include motorized bicycles with an engine of up to 50cc or 0.6 kW.
Each municipality defines the reach of its train station areas independently. However, it is thought to be within 500m.
