As of April 2022, the majority of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects worldwide were concentrated in North America, with 16 projects in operation and an additional 80 projects in development. In comparison, Europe had four CCS projects in operation at that time. CCS technologies involve capturing CO2 emitted from the burning of fossil fuels or from other industrial processes and sequestering the CO2 in underground storage facilities.
