Methane emissions in Germany were equivalent to 44.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2023, representing a year-on-year decrease of 1.5 percent. Annual methane emissions in Germany, which stem primarily from agricultural activities, have fallen by nearly 70 percent since 1990. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential some 30 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.
