Share of votes of the referendum on EU defense policy in Denmark 2022

In June 2022, in the aftermath of Russia's war in Ukraine, Denmark held a referendum on whether to abandon the clause that keeps the country outside of the European Union's common defense policy. Denmark has been a member of the European Union since 1973 (then the European Communities), but opted out of the common defense policy when the Maastricht Treaty established the European Union in 1992. In 2022, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Dane's saw the need to readjust its national security policy and 66.9 percent of the voters voted in favor of abandoning the clause, meaning that the country now will be a part of the EU's common defense policy. The turnout for the referendum was 65.8 percent.
