Between 2011 and 2021, freight transportation by road has more than doubled in size in the transport and storage industry in the United Kingdom (UK), with an increase of approximately 30,000 local business units. Postal and courier activities have also seen rapid growth in numbers. While only 17,000 businesses operated in the UK in 2011, ten years later, the sector counted 42,000 business units.
In 2022, figures slightly declined. That year, the UK counted 154,665 businesses' units.

"Business counts before 2015 included those registered for Pay As You Earn (PAYE) that could be matched to a Value Added Tax (VAT) business. Since 2015, counts include all PAYE businesses regardless of whether they are registered for VAT.
49 Land transport and transport via pipelines is comprised of: 4941 : Freight transport by road and Other land transport
Other land transport is made up of 4910 : Passenger rail transport, interurban, 4920 : Freight rail transport, 4931 : Urban and suburban passenger land transport, 4932 : Taxi operation, 4939 : Other passenger land transport n.e.c, 4942 : Removal services and 4950 : Transport via pipeline".
