ROE of banks in leading European countries 2007-2021

All leading European countries, except for Germany, saw a drop in the return on equity (ROE) of their respective banking systems in 2020 caused by COVID-19. The banking systems of Italy and Spain were particularly affected by the economic implications of the pandemic, though the drop was not as drastic as during the recession in the Euro area in 2011 and 2012. In 2021, the banking system of each leading European country recovered from the 2020 shock and saw a significant increase in their ROE.
