In 2022, the median number of daily downloads needed for iOS mobile apps in the United States to rank as top apps in the Apple App Store was 156,000, up by 37 percent compared to 2019. While app usage trends have been normalizing in 2022 after almost two years of unprecedented growth driven by the global coronavirus pandemic, the app market has become even more competitive for developers. By comparison, the number of median downloads mobile gaming apps have to amass to rank first in the United States has been decreasing. In 2019, mobile games needed approximately 170 thousand daily downloads from users in the United States to rank first in the Apple App Store, while in 2021 the median number of downloads needed was approximately 102 thousand per day.
