Meningococcus is a bacterium found in the throat and nose. Most often, it does not cause disease. Sometimes it is responsible for serious infections, such as meningitis, in children and young adults. These infections exist worldwide. There are several types of meningococci. In France, types B and C are the most common, vaccination against it is mandatory for infants since January 1, 2018. For infants, the vaccine strategy is to administer a first dose at the age of 5 months, followed by a second dose at the age of 12 months. Passed 12 months and until the age of 24, an additional vaccine dose is administered for those who did not receive the primary dose.

The data analysis excluded the French departments for which the DCIR* does not allow reliable estimates of vaccination coverage, due to the significant proportion of children vaccinated in PMI where vaccines are provided free of charge by the Departmental Council.
*DCIR stands for the inter-regime consumption datamart which contains all the city care reimbursed for beneficiaries of the Health Insurance. It makes it possible to carry out studies on the consumption of care by beneficiaries and the practices of health professionals.
