French Catholics' view of Catholic Church's response to sex violence in Church 2021
The Commission Independente sur les Abus Sexuels dans l'Eglise (Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church) published in October 2021, after more than two years of work, its report on the state of sexual abuse in the Church. According to this report, there have been 330,000 victims of sexual violence in the Church in France since 1950. It is in this context that the IFOP institute questioned French Catholics about their judgment of the Catholic hierarchy's response to the revelations of sexual abuse in the Church.
It appeared that less than a quarter of Catholics felt that the reaction of the Catholic hierarchy was commensurate with these revelations. There was only one in five among non-practicing Catholics, and 35 percent among practicing ones.
