Share of people with and without disabilities delaying care in Italy 2019, by region
Around 10 percent of Italians without disabilities had to delay medical treatments and healthcare over the course of 2019 because of long waiting lists and other difficulties in accessing the services. When considering people with disabilities, this figure more than doubled. More than one out of every five people with disabilities in Italy said they had to delay necessary healthcare. This situation varied considerably from region to region. In Sardinia, more than one out of four people with disabilities had to postpone medical treatments, while in Aosta Valley it was slightly more than one out of 10. Overall, residents of Southern regions seemed to struggle more with being able to access healthcare compared to people from Central and Northern Italy.
