At around 4.25 million terajoules, oil was a significant source of South Korea’s total energy supply in 2020. Coal came second with approximately 3.18 million terajoules. These energy sources comprised a far greater proportion of the country’s energy supply than their renewable counterparts.

Working towards a greener future

The problems presented by climate change are well-documented, and South Korea’s participation in the Paris Agreement indicates the direction the country is striving for. Currently, the role of renewable energy is not that large within the domestic energy sector. The South Korean government continues to invest in new and renewable energy as it looks to prepare for the future.

Domestic public energy companies

South Korea is home to several public energy companies affiliated with various ministries. Notably, Korea Coal Corporation (KOCOAL) announced that they would bring an end to their mining activities by 2025. Although coal had been the backbone of the nation’s industrialization in the past, it was slowly being phased out in recent years.
