Composition of residential buildings in Shanghai 2021, by type
As of 2021, there were 728.64 million square meters of residential housing stocks in Shanghai. More than 93 percent of all floor areas for residential purposes were apartments. Villas and united columns residences only represented 2.6 and 2.4 percent of all residential floor areas respectively. Due to the land policies in the country, most residential housings built since the housing reform of the late 1990s in China are highrise apartment buildings.
