Share of global GHG emissions covered by carbon pricing instruments 2005-2022
In 2022, more than 23 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions were covered by carbon pricing instruments such as carbon taxes and emissions trading systems. In 2005, when the European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS) became the first ETS, just 4.83 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions were covered by carbon pricing instruments. There were only 9 carbon pricing mechanisms in operation worldwide in 2005, but this number had increased to 68 in 2022.
