EU ETS surrendered units from aviation 2012-2022
By April 30 of each year, all airlines participating in the EU ETS must surrender a quantity of allowances to fully cover their emissions. By surrendering these allowances, the participants compensate for their emissions from the previous year. These airlines receive tradeable allowances that cover a certain level of emissions from their flights per year.
CO₂ emissions from aviation have been included in the EU ETS since 2012. In 2022, EU ETS aviation emissions totaled over 49 MtCO₂e.
