Share of seats held by women in national parliament in South Africa 2000-2022
In 2022, nearly 47 percent of the national Parliamentary seats in South Africa were occupied by women. The last general elections in the country took place in May 2019. Over the observed period, seats occupied by women increased significantly from almost 30 percent in 2000, increasing in each consecutive election. The share of women being elected into the national assembly jumped to 44.5 percent in the 2009 elections from almost 33 percent in the previous election.
