Natural vegetation loss in Brazil 1985-2021, by biome
The Pampa biome, in south Brazil, lost 29.5 percent of its natural vegetation between 1985 and 2021, making it the biome with the greatest land loss. By comparison, the Amazon biome lost 11.5 percent of its natural vegetation coverage. The Amazon and Pampa biome had the largest and smallest public forest area in 2021, respectively. Meanwhile, the Pantanal's vegetation growth is due to the water loss in the biome. Water coverage decreased from nearly 18 percent in 1985 to four percent in 2021.
