Secondary education: pupil/teacher ratio in France and the OECD

Since 2016, the average number of pupils in secondary schools per teacher decreased slightly in France, from 13.06 pupils to 13.01. This ratio is a little bit lower than the OECD average, which had reached 13.03 in 2019. In addition, the number of students per teacher in the OECD has also been declining since 2015, from 13.53 to 13.03.
In 2021, there were over 485,400 secondary school teachers in France.

The source adds the following information: "The ratio of students per teaching staff is the total number of full-time equivalent students enrolled at a specific level of education divided by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers at the same level. Teachers refer to professional personnel directly involved in teaching students: classroom teachers, special education teachers and other teachers who work with students as a whole class in a classroom, in small groups in a resource room, or in one-to-one teaching inside or outside a regular classroom. This does not include teachers’ aides and other paraprofessional personnel."
