Global trade volume of CO2 in carbon markets 2019-2021
In 2021, some 15.8 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO2) were traded in global carbon markets. This was an increase of 24 percent from the previous year, and almost 50 percent compared with 2019 levels. Europe accounted for almost 80 percent of the traded volume of CO2 worldwide in 2021.
