Greenhouse gas emissions in France 2019-2021, by economic sector
The annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in France were around 420 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent in 2021, of which 30 percent were from the transportation sector. After dropping to less than 400 million metric tons in 2020 during the COVID19 pandemic, GHG emissions increased again in 2021 but stayed below 2019 levels.
The GHG emission target for the period 2019-2023, as set by the National Low Carbon Strategy, was broadly achieved in 2020 and 2021.
