Distribution of consumer and business banking clients in Hungary 2021, by channel

In 2021, nearly half of Hungarian business banking users were omnichannel clients, and a further 36 percent typically preferred online banking. When it comes to Hungarian consumer banking users, the share of omnichannel clients was measured at 38 percent, while another 26 percent of the clients typically used mobile banking solutions. At the same time, 20 percent of Hungarians preferred online banking for personal purposes.

Ways of accessing online banking services

The findings of a survey realized in 2021 revealed that most Hungarians accessed online banking and insurance services using a smartphone application, with nearly half of the respondents doing so regularly. At the same time, approximately a third of the respondents used a laptop or desktop computer regularly, respectively. On the other hand, only five percent of surveyed Hungarians used a tablet computer as their primary device for accessing online banking and insurance services.

Instant Payment System

In order to reduce the amount of cash in circulation and promote digital payment methods, the Instant Payment System was launched in Hungary inMarch 2020. The new service made it available for domestic users to complete bank transfers within just a few seconds. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that approximately 80 percent of Hungarians made instant bank transfers from time to time. Moreover, eight percent of the respondents used this service multiple times a day.
