Number of people exposed to coastal flooding in the EU 2020-2100, by scenario
The number of people exposed to coastal flooding the European Union (including the UK) could grow by 14 to 22-fold by 2100, if no adaptation measures are taken. In a high emissions, no adaptation scenario, more than two billion people would be exposed in the region, in comparison to 100 thousand people per year in 2020. Meanwhile, if adaptation measures are implemented, the EU population exposed to coastal floods is estimated to stand around 600 to 800 thousand people per year, depending on the development in emissions in the period.
