Water transport was the dominant mode of transport for the trade into and from the United States (U.S.) in 2021. That year, 68.8 percent of the total weight of all goods traded by the U.S. was transported by ships. Pipelines were responsible for 11 percent of the weight of all U.S. trade that year.
