As of April 2024, around 76 gigawatts of electricity generation capacity in the United States were planned for retirement until 2035. Coal-fired electricity accounted for nearly 64 percent of capacity retirements in the country for the period, at 49 gigawatts. Another 24 gigawatts of natural gas capacity were planned to be retired by 2035.
