Virgin and recycled plastic in packaging used by major FMCG companies 2018-2021
The collective virgin plastic use of Global Commitment brand and retail signatories increased by 2.5 percent in 2021 - after two years of decline - to 11.9 million metric tons. This growth was mainly driven by the overall plastic packaging weight increasing 4.3 percent that year. The use of recycled content (pre- and post-consumer) accounted for roughly 10.5 percent of total plastic packaging weight. The use of virgin plastic in packaging will need to decrease by approximately 5.4 percent per year to reach the 2025 target.
