Hilcorp Energy was the biggest methane emitter among major U.S. oil and natural gas producers in 2022. The Texas-based energy exploration and production company released an estimated 78,000 metric tons of methane that year. Diversified Energy followed with methane emissions totaling 72,000 metric tons. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 28 times greater than carbon dioxide.
