Average HERS index score of homes in the U.S. 2021, in selected states
In 2021, North Carolina and Indiana were among the states with the highest average Home Energy Rating System (HERS) index scores in the United States. That indicates that the homes built in those states were less energy efficient than in Minnesota, which had an average score of 50. Despite having an average score of 59, Texas had the highest number of homes rated by the HERS index.
