Non-U.S. citizen prisoners as a share of total prison population U.S. 2021, by state
As of 2021, 20.1 percent of California's prison population were non-U.S. citizens, the highest share of any state in that year. Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, and Arizona rounded out the top five states with the highest share of non-U.S. citizens in prison in that year.
