As of late 2022, most of the buildings certified by Energy Star in the United States were constructed in 1977. Over 204 million square feet worth of multifamily homes and commercial buildings were built in the year 2000. Very few buildings with an energy efficiency certificate were constructed before the turn of the 20th century. Meanwhile, the federal program Energy Star has awarded more certificates in 2021 and 2022 than in any other year.

Over half of the buildings included in the registry received a certificate from Energy Star in more than one occasion. Such buildings are only taken into account once. Only the data from their last certificate was used.
