Shares of crude oil imports to Italy from former USSR countries 2010-2022
In 2021, the former Soviet Union (FSU) countries accounted for more than 40.5 percent of the total crude oil imported to Italy. The FSU countries were the main suppliers of crude oil to Italy that year.
FSU countries include Russia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, where the former was the leading crude oil importer to Italy in 2022. However, the oil imported from Russia was not consumed by Italian activities: most of the Russian crude oil imports to Italy in 2022 were received by the oil refinery plant ISAB, property of the Swiss company Litasco (branch of the Russian Lukoil), which could not rely on other suppliers.
