Cumulative CO₂ emissions from coal 1750-2021, by country
Since the Industrial Revolution began in 1750, enormous amounts of carbon dioxide have been emitted from coal production and burning. The United Kingdom, where the Industrial Revolution began, has emitted some 57 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂) from coal since 1750, while nearby Germany has emitted 65 GtCO₂. Nevertheless, the two largest CO₂ emitters from coal historically are China and the United States. As of 2021, China had emitted an accumulated 187 GtCO₂ from coal, with the majority of these emissions being produced over the last two decades.
