In 2021, the leading countries worldwide for high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system installations were the United States and Canada, in North America, and Germany, in Europe. The countries listed in this statistic not only hosted HVDC systems domestically, but also connections between the electricity grids of neighboring countries, such as electric power lines between Mexico and the U.S., or between the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
Additionally, Denmark has cross-border HVDC interconnections with Sweden, Norway, and Germany (of around two gigawatts), while a HVDC transmission system of two gigawatts is present between France and Spain.
The HVDC transmission market is currently expanding worldwide.
