Tajikistan had the largest share of children in its total population among Eastern European and Central Asian countries, at nearly 42 percent in 2021. Kyrgyzstan followed with an almost 40 percent share. On average across the region, every fourth inhabitant was between 0 and 17 years old. Bulgaria had the lowest share of children in the population in the region, at approximately 17 percent.
