Countries with the highest number of IDPs worldwide 2023, by reason

Sudan was the country with the highest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in 2023, reaching over 9 million people. The East African country has been ravaged by a devastating civil war since April 2023. IDPs are people who were forced to leave their home but who still reside in their home countries. Most of the 67 million IDPs worldwide were displaced due to conflict and violence, but there is also a high number of people displaced by natural disasters. For instance, in Afghanistan, 1.5 million of the 5.7 million IDPs were displaced by natural disasters.
