As of 2022 in India, seven journalists were imprisoned and another was killed while working on a dangerous assignment. However, in comparison, 2021 was the direst year for journalism in the world's largest democracy with reports of seven journalists being imprisoned and five being killed. In the period between 1992 and 2022, the country saw a total of 61 journalists killed and 25 journalists sentenced to jail. India ranked 150th on the World Press Freedom Index as of 2022.
