According to a study on the manipulation of online music streaming, conducted in France in 2021, Spotify detected that hip-hop and rap songs gathered the majority of fake music streams generated on its platform (84.5 percent), making it the music genre benefitting the most from this illegitimate push. R&B and soul songs came in second position, with a share of over nine percent of all detected fake streams on Spotify.

Fake music streams are one possible mechanism of manipulating online music streaming with intent to defraud and to artificially increase the performance and, hence, the revenue of a music piece. Fake music streams are illegitimate streams performed either by bots or by real persons receiving payment in return.
