In 2022, the most significant registered case of a data compromise in the United States, based on the number of affected individuals, was the Twitter data breach incident in December of that year. As a result of this incident, it is estimated that the e-mail addresses of more than 221 million users were leaked. Earlier that year, another data breach accident happened, affecting Twitter. This time, the leak was estimated to have impacted approximately 5.4 million Twitter users. The second major data breach incident involved the virtual pet website Neopets. This incident resulted in the compromise of 69 million user accounts.
