In order to limit the rise in global temperature by 1.5°C by 2050, the international shipping industry needs to both lower its energy consumption and decarbonize in line with net zero ambitions. To achieve these goals, the industry will have to transition from using fossil fuels to relying on alternative fuels by 2050. A sufficient amount of feedstock will have to be produced by then—namely 155 million metric tons (Mt) of nitrogen, 55 Mt of CO2, and 46 Mt of green hydrogen.
