In 2020, a vast majority of ships fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS)—81 percent—were using the open loop type of EGCS. Closed loop scrubbers were installed only on two percent of vessels fitted with scrubbers globally. There were over 4,000 ships fitted with scrubbers worldwide in 2020.
