In 2021, diabetes was the leading cause of kidney disease among people who received a transplant or started dialysis in Australia. In around 17 percent of people with kidney disease who received a transplant or started dialysis, glomerulonephritis was determined as the cause. Glomerulonephritis refers to damage of the glomeruli, which are the tiny filters inside the kidneys.
