Building sector emissions in the U.S. & China 2020-2050

China's building sector emitted over 652 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO₂e) in 2021. Meanwhile, the building sector in the United States produced some 512 MTCO₂e worth of greenhouse gas emissions that same year. According to World Data Lab, building-related emissions in the U.S. are projected to undergo a continual annual decline in the following decades under a "business-as-usual" scenario, falling to around 388 MTCO₂e in 2050.

The numbers created under the “business-as-usual” scenario depict such a scenario without drastic deviations in technology advancement or policy-making from past episodes. While there is typically still some technological progress in the form of reducing emissions intensities (stemming e.g. from energy efficiency gains) that are partly a result of policy actions, this scenario does not take into account announced policy pledges or the like.
